Heh

Nico doing THE most bizarre take on Jackson Browne's signature tune... from the soundtrack of a weird little comedy called "The Royal Tenenbaums," which I'm watching as this goes to press.  IMDB on the movie:
An estranged family of former child prodigies reunites when one of their member announces he has a terminal illness.
The movie is really funny or mebbe I've had too much single malt.

You hadda be here?

  1. I've never seen the Tenenbaums.

  2. It was ... odd. Very odd. I loved the outright, unapologetic quirkiness of it. I did not like Paltrow ... then again I rarely do.

  3. Quirky is the word. I liked it.

  5. Kris: The oddness was what I loved about it. This might have been the first time I'd ever seen Paltrow (and I agree with your take: Meh.), but I certainly liked Ms. Huston. A LOT.

    Lou: See above.

  6. I found it hilarious and Nico's choon stuck in my mind for days after watching it - which was only last week funnily enough. Quite by chance it was on Sky Indie. Some days I just need to laugh at odd. I'll find odd things funny in life on bus rides etc, too. One of these days I'll get my head kicked in.

  7. Andy: Thank GAWD I didn't say "Wes Anderson's 'The Royal Tenebaums,'" eh? I don't watch all that many movies, but I sure liked this one.

Alison: The Nico thing SO freaked me out I HAD to go look on YouTube for it... and there it was. Be careful on the bus...

  9. RIP Nicco - simpler musical time.

I absolutely hate the shi*t they are cranking out now. I think a guitar, a bass, and drums can make good listening.

Sadly, my brain is so wanting, I travel to polka concerts just to meet real people, and eat real food... Oom-pah-pah :-)

    Thanks for posting the song!

I did the same in another life... and another country... Anon. ;-)

  11. I am driven to comment about the picture of Nico (haven't seen the movie, so nothing to add there).

At first view it doesn't seem such a pretty face. Having seen other pictures of her, I know she was rather plain looking with bad teeth and cigarette smoke coming out like a passing train. But this picture is artful to me.

The face is almost sagging, as if gravity was more than 1G. The lips seem the result of a painter who exagerates the sizes of objects. The nostrils spaced too far apart. Surely, every woman has cheek bones - don't they?

I think it is the lighting, which is sans dramatic.

The resulting expression is interesting to look at. If I saw her in real life, I would be drawn to her, even though her eyes tell me she hates my guts and hopes I am going to die.

Still, the heavy German accent, raw voice, with lack of any vocal training, produced a few gems that will always be enjoyable - always.

All does not have to be pretty, to be beautiful.

  12. "Eye of the beholder" and all that, Anon. The best I could say for Nico would be "interesting." and I'm not being mean-spirited with that. I've found nearly all women "interesting" in one form or another... there are always good points if one chooses to look for them. Well, almost always... ;-)
